Karen wanted to see my grandparents, they were her parents after all. This is the first time she made an effort since they got sick, over a year ago.
At this point I was quite rebellious.
I had died my hair from a pretty golden to a deep dark brown.
Rick took one look at me and told me I looked ugly and asked me if I was trying to look like a boy.
I was furious. Furious that this asshole was allowed in my house and allowed to talk to me like this.
My father sensed the tension and quickly ushered the adults out the door for their dinner reservations.
I was livid. Now I had this ball growing in my stomach that I hadn't recognized yet. It was hatred.
I had watched my parents over the last year have a drink to calm them. So I did. I made myself a gin martini.... if that's what you call gin on the rocks with a lime in a martini glass.
My younger brother had a few friends over so I invited them to have some drinks with me.
After that, my brother and I helped ourselves to my parents gin. We had a BLAST. We got so shitfaced.
By the time my parents, Aunt Karen, and Rick got home we were pretty blitzed. And I was angry as ever. But now I had this liquid courage flowing through my veins.
Immediately, I screamed at my Aunt Karen for bring a disgusting pig around... asked her if she knew her boyfriend prefers little girls, I was awful. I couldn't stop.
My father went after me. He told me to watch my mouth, but I didn't. I turned my anger on him, I said such awful things to him. Things I cannot even bring myself to repeat. I was so hurtful... I had turned into this possessed demonic evil being.
He grabbed me by my throat and pinned me to the house and was about to hit me.
Then he realized what he was doing and he let go. I ran, punched a tree, and ran some more. My brother followed me. We ran down the street and into the woods. We avoided cars and people and had no choice but to cut through the back woods. We didn't want to be caught.
Unfortunately we had been swimming and my brother had just his bathing suit on. I had taken the time to throw a shirt and sweat pants over my suit. Neither of us had on any shoes.
It had started to rain and my brother was cold. I gave him my shirt. It was freezing, we were shoeless, and we were wet and drunk. We had no where to go so I decided to guide us had back home. We had no choice.
On our way back I had slipped and fallen backwards into a patch of poison ivy. This was not going well.
We made it back to our own yard and I sent my brother inside.
I had come up with a plan to move out, I just needed to call my friend Ava. Only problem was I had left my cell phone inside... I had to get it. I had to go inside.
I quietly snuck in the back door and grabbed my Nokia. As I was about to leave my father spoke up, he was sitting up in the dining room waiting for me. All he said was "just go to sleep Eliza." And so I did.
The next day my Aunt Karen and Rick were gone. We never discussed what happened. We were a family built on not talking about the truth.
